The History of the Otoscope
Otoscopes were already used in the 19th century to examine the ear canal and the eardrum. They were invented by the French physician Jean-Pierre Bonnafont. Prior to that, the examination of the ear canal could only be done with a concave mirror. This mirror had to be illuminated by an external light source to direct the light onto the desired area. While this made examination possible, the diagnostics were generally insufficient.
Bonnafont's invention was widely popularized as an otoscope by the ENT specialist Anton Friedrich von Tröltsch and largely replaced the concave mirror. However, the modern devices have only inherited the ear funnels, also known as tips, from their predecessors. For hygiene reasons, these are often disposable plastic funnels. However, reusable tips made of plastic or metal, intended for sterilization, are also common.
