General information about clinical thermometers

In the past, clinical thermometers measured temperature using mercury in a glass tube. Due to mercury's high toxicity to the human body, the easily breakable material from which the thermometers were made, and the difficulty of disposal, mercury may no longer be used in thermometers today.

Modern clinical thermometers

These can be divided into three different categories. Instead of mercury thermometers, Galinstan clinical thermometers are used today. In terms of design, they resemble mercury thermometers, but are filled with the non-toxic alloy Galinstan, consisting of gallium, indium, and tin. For example, Galinstan thermometers have the advantage of being easy to disinfect due to their glass construction. In addition, digital clinical thermometers are manufactured as either contact or non-contact thermometers.

Digital contact thermometers consist of a sensor tip and a digital display. Since the sensor tip is generally made of nickel, they cannot be used by people with a nickel contact allergy. Non-contact thermometers use infrared sensors to determine body temperature. This makes it possible to measure temperature hygienically.
